Dental implants-do you or anyone you know have them?

If so, tell me all about them....the pain, healing process, comfort while healing and after, cost, treatment prior to and after---everything....

Dental implants-do you or anyone you know have them?
I really HATE people who say "go see a dentist" as the answer...it's like "geez, thanks for telling me something that already occurred to me....maybe I want to talk to other consumers first..."

That said, I could write for the next hour and still not address everything you really need to know here! wow.

Basics.

1. Pain - well, not much worse than having teeth extracted. Your'e numbed up w/ local anesthetic and you're sore later; the pain is treated with NSAIDs and probably something like vicodin for a day or so. no biggie. for extra $ (maybe 5-600/hr) you can have IV sedation for the procedure.

2. Healing process - probably takes 2-6 months for the implants to integrate into the bone completely. In the mean time you MAY be able to do "immediate loading" on them (ie, a fake tooth over the implant) but you may have to wear some kind of temporary partial or full denture while you wait.

3 Comfort; A - while healing - see #1 and

B - after (you mean after it's done?) very comfortable - feels just like a real tooth more than anything else.

4. Cost. each implant (ie, every titanium "screw") you get will be $2500 to $3000 , dep. on where you live.... then if you get a crown on the implant it's another grand each. So if your'e missing 4 teeth, you'll be paying $16000 total. Insurance (if you have it ) may cover up to half of that, i would guess.

However, if you're missing , say, all your lower teeth, you'll get say, 4 implants (12 grand) and the have to get a full denture that snaps over it, so that's another $1500 there. You didn't say what they were for, so hard to predict.

5 Treatment prior to..... I'm not sure what that means! Um...Ooh! If it's a lower implant and youv'e lost a lot of bone where the tooth/teeth used to be, you can expect to have to add some back in - the surgeon may use artificial bone or your own hip, for example. this way there's enough bone to support an implant. Likewise, if it's a upper back tooth, that's right below your sinuses; sometimes they have to do a "sinus lift" to add more bone for the same reason. These procedures can tack a few grand onto your overall cost. You won't know if this is necessary 'til you consult a dentist and THEY might not know and refer you to an oral surgeon.

Oh, and YES, know many people who have them, esp patients. They all feel it's worth the cost. Implants have a 95% success rate over twenty year studies, so way more reliable than bridges and more comfortable or natural than dentures.

I hope this helps; email me if you have more questions...

Reply:lots of drugs and all is better in 3 days
Reply:I just asked my dentist last week how much it would cost to get one implant in the back of my mouth and he said $4,000 dollars.
Reply:I got them (full set - upper and lower) after having 17 teeth extracted that day first. Horrible, horrible. Looked like I'd gone 10 rounds with Tyson and lost. Plus mega-pain.

Cost me $11,000 out of pocket 8 yrs ago, and I had 50% dental insurance coverage.

I've had to have a bone graft since then (one cracked out of the upper bone, and had to have new bone cells from a cadaver implanted), and now, I'm having to go back AGAIN for removal of them all on top and redone completely.

It will be $5,000 out of pocket this time (still with 50% coverage). Plus pain.

This should ONLY be a last resort!
Reply:Dental and Dental Implants surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and lasik surgery in India by a company called Forerunners Healthcare. The Price for dental and lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories.

They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.
Reply:You have well explained answer above. The only pain here is that of high cost. I am a beneficiary of different treatment, but I was amazed at the number of top dentists and clinics that Dental Care India Tour has in India. The tourism provided by them made my visit worthwhile. It was also made know to me their competitive price of $1200 for world's best dental implant with ceramic crown.
