Why do dentists charge Sooooo much for dental implants?

after researching on the net ive found out a dental implant costs around £200 from the manufacturer, yet a dentist will charge the patient in the region of £1500-£2500 per tooth.

so i ask this question why charge so much? it's all good making a profit (afterall dentists are in business the same way as everyone else).

but thats like a 1000/1200% profit, don't you think this is bleeding the public dry?

Why do dentists charge Sooooo much for dental implants?
So many of these answers are just plain ignorant of facts.

The titanium insert from the manufacturer is expensive - around $400 US. But the skill of inserting this part into bone tissue - making sure the bone is dense enough and healthy enough to heal around it and actually incorporate it as part of your body - is something that takes a long time to learn.

There is additional training the dentist and staff must do before they can perform this type of surgery - and it IS surgery. Extra instruments and equipment are needed, follow-up healing visits are included.

There is nowhere NEAR 1200% profit involved, more like 30% by the time the doctor pays for the staff and overhead.

Really, how much actual material goes into brain operations, or heart surgery? There is just as much skill and training required for a sucessful implant!

This is NOT done just for vanity. Especially in the lower arch, an implant can secure bone tissue so it will not recede, causing serious consequences. If there is a tooth missing, the bone tissue tends to atrophe, or just plain go away since it has nothing to do. An implant integrates to the bone and keeps it in place.

Before making uninformed comments about how doctors all want to be rich and rip people off, stop to think how long they have to study (and those courses aren't exactly easy) and how much it costs them to be qualified to do this work.

If you think you can do it cheaper - go to dental school and "get rich" yourself instead of complaining about the dedicated professionals who do it for you.
Reply:So there kids can go to college
Reply:so they can repay their student loans
Reply:Because they can get away with it. The whole medical establishment is a bunch of white coat crooks.
Reply:because they are all money-faced freaks

really, 1500-2500 PER TOOTH?!! WTF

joking

maybe because of the equipment they use, but just think of the benefit given to you..? I think..hope I helped..[at least]
Reply:Because they can. Free market.

If you'd looked after your teeth in the first place you wouldn't need them.
Reply:They charge so much because they can, and people will still pay!

There may be better and cheaper alternatives.
Reply:Sounds rather expensive - thought it was around half that.

It is not really straight forward dentistry but actually more like an operation with significant risks to your health.
Reply:luddite, your reply irrates me so much...the majority of people with missing teeth do look after their teeth but what happens if they have been in an accident or assaulted?....the victim is not only humliated by the assult but they will have to pay £1000's in dentistry bills therefore being in debt and their family going hungry.

i am one of those victims and it's people's 'ignorence' like you have that make me hope one day you lose teeth/tooth so you realise how it feels.
Reply:You are correct . It is for vanity reasons. Another question If the jaw rejects the metal that holds the implant what then? Extraction More $$$. There is too much vanity in the world to look good and young. They charge because some people would pay. I would not. It is bleeding the public dry to their advantage.

We all have bills to pay, and college loans but the dentists over do it. Someone has to pay for their luxury homes, cars, vacations. country club memberships. Let them cut out some of those expenses and pass it off to the patients. They will gain more patients.

Luddite must have one hell of a good insurance plan.

Dentist should not complain if you do not come to them because you have no dental insurance and cannot afford their fees.

Insurance only pays a little percentage.
Reply:I agree. I brush and floss and don't eat sweets, yet my teeth are just naturally weak and crappy. I've had 3 root canals, and crowns, and more extensive dental work done. I didn't ASK for this to happen to me. My wisdom teeth are also impacted and erupt on a constant basis and I can't afford to take off work and have the surgery to remove them. It isn't something I ask for or if I would have done something more to them. It's teeth. They are expensive.

You know? I wouldn't want to pay Joe Bob 50 dollars to get some pliers and pull out my wisdom teeth. I wouldn't trust someone who only charged 100 dollars or so to mess around with my teeth. There are important and thousands of nerve endings in your mouth and teeth and they can cause such pain and anguish you feel like you want to die just to get the misery over with, as well as connect to the brain.

You want someone underqualified messing with something that can affect your brain, including muscles around your face? When you have a toothache, or such pain, does that affect everything else you do? YES.

So...paying extra for some extra good care and someone who is a professional, someone who knows what they're doing and accredited makes a huge difference to me. Believe me, I know my empty pockets cry for money at times, but I want to have teeth when I'm 60 years old. My natural teeth. So, if I have to shell out a few extra bucks for someone who didn't learn dentistry in the back of someone's truck, then that's fine with me.

Just do your research. There's a difference between a good dentist and someone who's just out to make money.
Reply:i just think dentists charge those prices because they 'can'

its not like buying a new car, people can't exactly go different places for a quote so we have to pay what they are asking for.

in some parts its very hard to get a dentist that take new patients, so we have to make do with a butcher.

the prices though are ridculious what they ask for, it's as if life isn't already hard enough :/
Reply:emmalue is EXACTLY right on all counts. I couldn't have said it better myself. Read that post again and count it once for me.
Reply:think about the time and work it takes to put them in. why does a doctor get so much money just to tell you that you have a cold and go home and rest till you feel better? i think thats a better question. at least a dentist does something.
Reply:Dental and Dental Implants surgery have become very common now. My cousin got her dental implants and lasik surgery in India by a company called Forerunners Healthcare. The Price for dental and lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories.

They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India. as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Many patients travel from United States of America and UK to get low cost surgery in India. Indian corporate hospitals are comparable to hospitals anywhere in the world. In fact, India has medical facilities that are comparable with the USA, UK and Canada. India offers World Class Medical Facilities, comparable with any of the western countries. India has state of the art Hospitals and the best medical experts. With the best infrastructure, the best possible Medical facilities, accompanied with the most competitive prices, you can get the treatment done in India at the lowest prices.

Hope this helps.
Reply:I WHOLE HEARTED-LY agree with nutnut123. I must also make mention that there are others on here crying out that its all about VANITY%26gt;??? Are you kidding me? Think before you offer your "wisdom" people.

While I cannot deny that the implants are hella expensive, I must say, they are an awesome invention. Do you belittle a child who has braces? What about that.....the human smile is a huge point in 'first impressions'. There is nothing wrong with wanting a better smile.

The IMPLANTS are expensive for many differing reasons. For one; alot of folks do not know the whole process and evolution of what goes into getting them. From start to finish is quite a duration of time. Then, you have to factor in whether or not your body will accept or reject them. And as another here made note of......"what if" you go from being a candidate to not being one%26gt; for whatever reason. Then....your jaw is full of holes and thus weakened and your latter state is worse than before!

GRIN and bear it, I say. If you want them, or need them bad enough......and the ability of not hassling with dentures, or the significance of a nice smile means enough.....to heck with the price.....I think they're well worth it.
Reply:because when you have 5 top front teeth missing and you go through the treatment and relise all the work that they have to do and how detailed you actually realise why? it is a really facinating thing aswell how they do it, its took 9months so far and i have only 2 implants in my bone at the moment. to be honest i see it from a different point of view and think its quite a resonable price. what would you pay for your arm to replaced? i know my treatment is worth it, but luckily i aint payin the insurance company is! lol!
Reply:I know, it is ridiculous!! But the reason is because dental implants involve a lot of work over periods of weeks! It is not something that can be done in a few sessions as with other dental work!! Also, because dental implants are a relatively new dental technique and thus involves particular expertise in the area!! Hope that helps!!
Reply:I'm a Dental Nurse and its not bleeding the public dry because firstly its cosmetic that why its not available on the NHS its like how much does a nose job a face lift a tummy tuck or a boob job cost secondly its a specialised aspect of dentistry like an oral surgeon even tho he takes teeth out and operates on the soft tissue in your mouth he cannot just carry out this procedure he has to qualify at it first third all the staff have to be specifically trained at it which the dentist has to pay for fourth its done under general anaesthetic normally so who pays the anaesthetist it cost about 200 GBP without staffing to keep a surgery working for 1 hour because of all the equipment that needs to be on and implants are done under theatre conditions with heart monitors etc bought for the obvious reason

BY THE WAY WHERE I WORK WE ONLY SEE NHS PATIENTS no private treatment so by saying this I'm not lining my own pocket and I'm probably on less money than a lot of you lot
Reply:1. Before becoming a dentist, he/she has to pay a lot of tuition and time to study and pass exam to get lience. Now dentise want to recovery those investments.

2. When most dentists charge so much money, you have no reason to charge less. Who doesn't not like money ?

3. They have to pay insurance in case patients sue them.
