For those who have gotten Dental implants?

I had 2 root canals and crowns a year ago. Recently, one of them broke off because food somehow got under the crown and caused it to decay and weaken and break off. They cemented it back on for now. I went to see an oral surgeon today for an implant consultation. I chose an implant vs bridge because it last longer and is more real. Bridges affect 2 teeth around it which I don't like. It is expensive and insurance doesn't really pay for the implant part. They may pay for part of the tooth extraction before hand.

Have any of you had implants? How long have you had to wait total from start to finish? I have to wait until the tooth extraction and bone graft heal for 3 months, then get the implant wait 3 or 4 more months, then get the post, then get a crown.

Have any of you that have gotten an implant wish they had not and why? or why do you love it?

Has anyone gotten one and it fail? What happened?

Thanks in advance for your kind answers and information.

For those who have gotten Dental implants?
Implants are the best tooth replacement option in dentistry. Everything that you say sounds accurate. It takes time and $ but is well worth it. I personally have not had implants in my mouth. I am a dentist and I can tell you that all the patients that I have placed implants in feel they made the right choice. So go for it and don't worry too much. Also make sure you follow all the post operative instructions so that you don't develop any complications. Good Luck.
Reply:Good choice. Dental implants have one of the highest success rates of any medical procedure. The usual healing time is 3 months for bone graft and 10-12 weeks for the implant to fuse to the bone.
Reply:I got an implant..It is worth it. The "tooth" is strong and no pain. It was weird for the first few months as it felt like there was no tooth there but the feeling came back.

All in all it was a real easy procedure and well worth it.

Much much easier than a root canal.
Reply:I have not had any implants but I have seen this done in an office that I was observing for school. It is amazing how far dentistry has come in the last 20 years! I think it's a very wise choice and I'm sure you won't regret it. The procedure doesn't seem painful at all....the patient was laughing, smiling, and said she felt no discomfort at all. My class actually had a field trip to a prosthedontist today and we saw slides of some of his cases. You would be astonished by what a difference implants have made and when it's all done...they look just like their natural teeth.
Reply:Thanks for asking this question, I like the answers you got. I am also debating getting an implant. I had a root canal, then infection, then Apico, then infection, cleared up but still having problems. I go to a periodontist for first gum surgery and now every 3 months alternate with dentist and perio for cleanings. The last time I went to perio he did not like the look of the crowned tooth, took an x-ray and said there was bone loss around and advised me to get a bridge or implant. So I went back to my dentist and he refered me to another perio who does implants ( mine does not). The new perio explained it all to me but since I have 70% bone loss in this spot I would need a bone graft and the whole procedure would take about a year. So I am thinking about it all. I was taking Fosamax which is now linked to osteonecrosis of the jaw (dead jaw) where the jaw deteriates, but all my doctors have told me it is really from intravenious Fosamax and for oral Fosamax it is 1% chance of getting it. So I search the internet daily, in the meantime I have a tooth on the opposite side of the bad tooth that has been bothering me, a similiar pain that brought me to the first root canal. So now do I get start the implant process, and later another root canal on the other side and then how do I eat, there is no side left to eat on. Sorry for all this extra info that does not pertain to your question, but from reading your answers it does give me a boost toward getting the implant. Good luck with yours!!
Reply:There are coverages that will help you with the cost of dental implants, for example DentalService4Less. You will save significant percentage of the cost dpending on where you live. Search for oral surgeons or prosthodontists in your area.
